Brick cleaning

What brick cleaning with us looks like

Brick lasts for a century, but the mortar between the bricks is softer. A careless high-pressure clean can wash out pointing, open joints and let water into the wall. On Federation homes with tuckpointing, the damage is expensive to fix.

We clean brick with a soft wash or low-pressure rinse, chosen for the brick and the mortar. Efflorescence, the white salty bloom on new or damp brick, gets a specific treatment once the cause is understood.

Efflorescence

White powder on brick is salt carried out of the wall by water. Cleaning removes it, but it comes back while the wall is still damp. Finding the water source, often a downpipe, garden bed or failed flashing, is the lasting fix.

Will cleaning damage old mortar?

Not with our methods. Mortar that's already crumbling may lose loose material, which we show you first.

Can you remove white bloom from bricks?

Yes, with a specific treatment. It may return until the wall dries out.

Do you use acid on brick?

Not as a default. Acid washing is for builders' mortar stains on new brick and needs care.

Can painted brick be cleaned?

Yes, with a soft wash so the paint isn't stripped.

How often should brick walls be cleaned?

Every few years for most homes, more often on shaded, damp walls.

Can you clean brick paving and fix the sand?

We clean the paving and can re-sand joints afterwards.
