Sandstone cleaning

What sandstone with us looks like

Sandstone soaks up whatever sits on it. Mould turns it black on the shaded side, lichen leaves grey spots, iron in the stone bleeds orange, and leaf tannin stains paving the colour of tea. A cheap pressure clean makes it look better for a day and leaves the surface rough and more porous than before.

We treat sandstone as a soft stone. Biological growth is killed with a stone-safe cleaner, given time to work and rinsed at low pressure. Iron and tannin stains get their own treatment. The result is clean stone with its tooling marks and texture still there.

Low pressure cleaning of a sandstone retaining wall, mould lifting off the stone

Why it matters

What you get

Face of the stone protected

Low pressure and the right nozzle so we don't etch, pit or round off the edges of your blocks.

Stains treated, not blasted

Black mould, lichen, iron and tannin each get the cleaner that works on them.

Heritage-aware

On older homes we test first and work to the standard expected in conservation areas.

Sealing on the same visit

Once dry, cleaned sandstone can be sealed so it stays cleaner for years.

Great work, fair pricing, and excellent communication.

Step 03 of 04

Low pressure rinse

Rinsing at a pressure that removes the dead growth without cutting into the stone.

Washing a painted boundary wall
Google review, Karen
Excellent service! Nathan is punctual and nothing is a problem.

Step 04 of 04

Spot treat and seal

Remaining iron or tannin stains are treated, then the stone can be sealed once dry.

Why high pressure ruins sandstone

Sandstone is sand grains held together by natural cement. A high-pressure jet cuts that cement and washes out the surface grains. You see it as a rough, slightly furry face and rounded edges. Water then soaks in faster, so the stone gets dirty again sooner and grows mould more easily.

The fix isn't a better pressure washer. It's a chemical clean that does most of the work, followed by a rinse that removes what the chemical loosened.

Retaining walls and stairs on steep blocks

Harbour and beach homes are often built into the slope, with metres of sandstone retaining wall and long flights of stairs. Those stairs get slippery when they go green. Cleaning them is as much about safety as looks, and we can seal treads with an anti-slip additive afterwards.

Call 0416 007 745
Can sandstone be pressure cleaned?

Yes, at low pressure and after a chemical treatment. High pressure on its own damages the surface and makes it stain faster.

Will the cleaning change the colour of my sandstone?

It brings back the natural colour that was under the dirt. Some stones are lighter or more golden than owners remember.

Can you remove the orange or rust stains?

Iron staining often comes from inside the stone. It can usually be lightened a lot with a specific treatment, though some natural banding is part of the stone.

Is it safe for heritage sandstone?

We test first and use the gentlest method that works. If a council heritage officer has specific requirements, we follow them.

How long does clean sandstone stay clean?

Unsealed, about one to two years in a shaded coastal garden. Sealed, it stays cleaner for longer and the next clean is quicker.

Do you clean sandstone around pools?

Yes. We protect the water and the pool equipment, and use a cleaner that's safe to rinse near pools.
