Limestone cleaning
What limestone cleaning with us looks like
Limestone is the stone of the calm, pale terrace: honed French limestone around the pool, sawn limestone on the steps, block limestone on a feature wall. It's also one of the softest stones you can put outside. It soaks up water, stains easily and dissolves slowly in acid.
That's why we never use acidic cleaners or high pressure on it. A pH-neutral cleaner loosens the dirt, low pressure lifts it, and stains get their own treatment. The aim is an even, clean surface without patches of etching or wear.

Why limestone needs different care
Limestone is mostly calcium carbonate, the same mineral that fizzes when it touches vinegar. Any acidic cleaner, including some mould removers and brick cleaners, eats into the surface and leaves dull spots. It's also soft enough that a narrow high-pressure jet can leave lines in it.
Sunscreen, pool water, red wine and leaf litter are the usual culprits on a terrace. A clean every year or so and a good sealer keep them on top of the stone instead of in it.

Can limestone be pressure cleaned?
At low pressure, yes. High pressure can scar the surface, so we use a surface cleaner at reduced pressure.
Why has my limestone gone patchy?
Usually acid etching from a cleaner, or a worn sealer in high-traffic spots. We'll tell you which on site.
What removes black mould from limestone?
A stone-safe treatment that kills the mould, then a low-pressure clean. We avoid acidic products that would etch the surface.
Should limestone be sealed?
Outdoors, yes. A breathable penetrating sealer slows stains and helps the stone stay pale.
Can you clean limestone walls?
Yes, at low pressure from the top down, with the garden protected below.
How often should a limestone pool area be cleaned?
About once a year, or more often near the coast where salt builds up.
