North Shore
Deck oiling on the North Shore
North Shore decks are often large hardwood decks under tall trees, damp and shaded for much of the day. We clean off the mould, let the timber dry properly and oil it so it doesn't grey and split.
Sydney sun and rain are hard on timber. Unoiled hardwood goes grey, dries out and starts to crack and split, and mould grows on the shaded boards. A good decking oil soaks into the timber, slows that down and brings back the colour of the wood.
Oil only works on clean, dry timber, so every job starts with a deck clean. Then the deck dries out properly before we apply the oil, working along the boards so the finish is even. We'll tell you how long to keep off it before the furniture goes back.
Local detail
Deck oiling across the North Shore
What we see in suburbs on the North Shore:
- Cremorne: Federation brick, tuckpointing, timber fretwork and slate roofs all need gentle methods.
- Wahroonga: Its best-known homes are Federation and Arts and Crafts houses with slate or terracotta roofs, timber fretwork, brick and sandstone, set in big gardens with tennis courts and pools.
- Mosman: Those older homes have tuckpointed face brick, sandstone bases, slate or terracotta roofs and painted timber verandahs.
- Roseville: Homes have face brick, timber detailing and terracotta roofs, under a tall canopy.
- Neutral Bay: Neutral Bay's older homes have soft brick, original render and timber.
How often
For deck oiling, plan on near the water, every 12 months; under trees, every 12 to 18 months.
What affects the quote
- Heritage materials: test patches and lower pressure take longer than a modern build.
- Older materials: soft brick, original pointing and old paint mean gentler, slower methods.
- Waterfront: wash water near the shoreline may need to be contained and collected.

Our method
How we handle deck oiling

Nathan is punctual, knowledgeable, polite and left our place neat and tidy.
Step 01 of 04
Clean
The deck is cleaned at low pressure so the grain isn't furred up.

He was professional, responsive, and delivered exactly as promised.
Step 02 of 04
Dry
The timber is left until it's dry right through, which depends on the weather.

Great work, fair pricing, and excellent communication.
Step 03 of 04
Check
We note loose boards, raised nails and damaged timber, so you can decide what to fix first.

Excellent service! Nathan is punctual and nothing is a problem.
Step 04 of 04
Oil
Decking oil is applied along the boards and the excess wiped back.

Nathan did a great job washing the external sides of our house. The weatherboard was dirty and had cobwebs. Nathan went above and beyond our expectations, the house was perfectly clean and all the cobwebs were gone.
Nathan did an incredible job at my home cleaning all my outdoor paving areas. He even washed some extra areas of my house free of charge and his price was very reasonable. He's a lovely fella and was prompt, friendly and professional. I highly recommend Nathan's services.
Nathan just completed a pressure wash of our travertine pavers under our alfresco area, around the pool and the sundeck. What an absolutely fantastic job. Nathan is punctual, knowledgeable, polite and left our place neat and tidy. We will certainly be calling him back on a regular basis and can highly recommend him.

Do you offer deck oiling everywhere on the North Shore?
Yes. We cover all 17 suburbs listed above from our base in Elanora Heights.
How often should a deck be oiled?
Usually every 12 to 18 months, more often in full sun near the coast. When water stops beading, it's time.
Do you clean the deck before oiling?
Always. Oil over dirt and mould traps them in the timber.
How long before I can walk on an oiled deck?
It depends on the product and the weather. We'll tell you the drying time for the oil we use.
Can you oil a grey, weathered deck?
Yes, after a clean to lift the grey surface fibres and dirt. Old, dry timber may need more than one coat.
Can you oil merbau?
Yes. Merbau bleeds tannin, so we clean it and let it dry well before oiling, and keep the run-off off nearby paving.
