Deck oiling on the Northern Beaches

Decks are everywhere on the Northern Beaches, from beach house balconies to big pool decks on the slopes. Salt and full sun dry the timber out quickly, so many decks here need oiling every year or so to stop them greying and cracking.

Sydney sun and rain are hard on timber. Unoiled hardwood goes grey, dries out and starts to crack and split, and mould grows on the shaded boards. A good decking oil soaks into the timber, slows that down and brings back the colour of the wood.

Oil only works on clean, dry timber, so every job starts with a deck clean. Then the deck dries out properly before we apply the oil, working along the boards so the finish is even. We'll tell you how long to keep off it before the furniture goes back.

Local detail

Deck oiling across the Northern Beaches

What we see in suburbs on the Northern Beaches:

  • Balgowlah Heights: The homes are generous: two and three storeys, large decks, pools set into the hillside and long runs of sandstone retaining wall.
  • Avalon Beach: The suburb is known for its timber and glass houses by well-known architects, many set low into the bush with decks wrapping around them.
  • Davidson: Homes are brick and render, often with decks looking into the bush.
  • North Balgowlah: It's a suburb of decks, retaining walls and big gardens.
  • Collaroy Plateau: Streets around Plateau Road and Edward Street hold big renovated homes on wide blocks, many with pools, decks and landscaped gardens.
  • Manly: Behind the Corso, in the streets of Federation and Californian bungalows near Darley Road, it's the sea air and the humidity that build up on render and timber.

How often

For deck oiling, plan on near the water, every 12 months; under trees, every 12 to 18 months.

What affects the quote

  • Bush debris: gutters and roofs may need clearing before washing.
  • Leaf litter: tannin stains and moss need treating, not just washing.
  • Steep access: carrying gear down stairs and running long hoses adds time.

Nathan did a great job washing the external sides of our house. The weatherboard was dirty and had cobwebs. Nathan went above and beyond our expectations, the house was perfectly clean and all the cobwebs were gone.

Nathan did an incredible job at my home cleaning all my outdoor paving areas. He even washed some extra areas of my house free of charge and his price was very reasonable. He's a lovely fella and was prompt, friendly and professional. I highly recommend Nathan's services.

Nathan just completed a pressure wash of our travertine pavers under our alfresco area, around the pool and the sundeck. What an absolutely fantastic job. Nathan is punctual, knowledgeable, polite and left our place neat and tidy. We will certainly be calling him back on a regular basis and can highly recommend him.

Do you offer deck oiling everywhere on the Northern Beaches?

Yes. We cover all 42 suburbs listed above from our base in Elanora Heights.

How often should a deck be oiled?

Usually every 12 to 18 months, more often in full sun near the coast. When water stops beading, it's time.

Do you clean the deck before oiling?

Always. Oil over dirt and mould traps them in the timber.

How long before I can walk on an oiled deck?

It depends on the product and the weather. We'll tell you the drying time for the oil we use.

Can you oil a grey, weathered deck?

Yes, after a clean to lift the grey surface fibres and dirt. Old, dry timber may need more than one coat.

Can you oil merbau?

Yes. Merbau bleeds tannin, so we clean it and let it dry well before oiling, and keep the run-off off nearby paving.
